Perhaps you were told you were “damaged”. That something inside you was broken. That you needed to “repair”, “rebuild” or “retrain” yourself. Worse — live with it!
What if that were wrong?
What if your body were not the problem — but the solution?
The bone metaphor
When a bone breaks, we do not repair it. We put it back in place. Stabilise it. Give it the conditions to do what it knows how to do: knit back together.
And once healed, the bone is stronger than before. The fracture site becomes denser, more resistant. The body does more than return to its initial state. It strengthens.
Your nervous system works the same way.
What trauma did
Trauma did not break your body. It put your nervous system on alert. It taught it that certain situations were dangerous — and your body responded accordingly.
Closing up. Pain. Dissociation. Hypervigilance. These are not malfunctions. They are protections. Intelligent responses to a situation that was not.
Your body did exactly what was needed to allow you to survive.
The body is not the problem
The problem is that these protections are still active — even though the danger has passed.
Your nervous system has not received the signal that it is over. It keeps watch. Keeps tensing. Keeps protecting you from something no longer there.
It is not weakness. It is not failure. It simply has not yet had the conditions it needs to regulate itself.
What the body needs
Not to be forced. Not to be retrained. Not to be “corrected”.
It needs a setting. A space safe enough to put down what it carries. Support that respects its pace. A steady presence.
Just as a bone needs to be put back in place and stabilised, your nervous system needs a setting where it can finally release.
And when that setting exists, the body does the rest. It knows how to heal. That knowledge is within it.
Healing after trauma: stronger than before
Women who go through this work do not return to “how they were before”. They arrive somewhere else. Somewhere they have never been.
They know their bodies differently. They know how to set boundaries. They recognise their signals. They no longer let just anyone decide for them.
They are not “repaired”. They are transformed.
Like the bone that heals stronger, they have become stronger where they were hurt.
You do not need to be repaired
You need a space where healing can happen.
A space where you are not judged. Where your pace is respected. Where someone believes in your ability to move through this — because they have seen it, again and again, with others.
Your body knows how to heal. It is simply waiting for the right conditions.
